The impending threats of catastrophic climate change and peak oil are driving our society towards increased use of biomass for energy, chemical compounds and other materials – the beginnings of a biobased economy. As alternative development models for the biobased economy emerge, we need to determine potential applications, their perspectives and possible impacts as well as policies that can steer technological and market development in such a way that our objectives are met. Currently, it is still far from clear what will be the most sustainable routes to follow, which technologies should be included, and how their development will affect, and be affected by, research, public opinion and policy and market forces.

This groundbreaking work, edited by a group of leading researchers originally from Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands, sets out to unpick the complex systems in play. It provides an illuminating framework for how policy and market players could and should drive the development of a biobased economy that is effective, sustainable, fair and cost efficient. Starting with a state-of-the-art overview of major biobased technologies, including biorefinery and technologies for the production of biofuels, biogas, biomass feedstocks for chemistry and bioplastics, it discusses how different actor groups interact through policy and markets. Information from case studies is used to demonstrate how the potential of the biobased economy in different parts of the world, such as North America, Europe, and emerging economies like China and Brazil can be realised using research, debate, policy and commercial development. The result is an essential resource for all those working in or concerned with biobased industries, their policy or research.

Big trumeau assembled with antique wood. The sides are notched and serpentine, the front has a double serpentine shape and four drawers. It has a drop-down openable door which conceals a small compartment with two drawers. The upper part has two shaped doors with mirrors and a tall carved cymatium with mirror. Inside inlaid compartment with three drawers. Ebonized frames.

Oil painting on canvas. Italian school of the 17th century. The Saint is depicted inside his study, intent on reading and studying the sacred texts, but in penitential garb, i.e. clad only in a red cloth draped around his naked body. The painting, relined, has a significant crack; It is placed in a contemporary gilded wooden frame.

Landscape with Figures

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. Achille Vertunni was born and trained artistically in Naples, but then moved to Rome where, in his mature age, his studio in Via Margutta was a point of reference for many Italian and foreign critics and artists (D'Annunzio, De Sanctis , Franz Listz, to name a few) and was frequented by the nobility and politicians of the time, figures of the Risorgimento and visitors of the "Grand Tour". His first themes were inspired by historical events, but he then dedicated himself to landscape which, from the seventies, became the almost exclusive subject of his paintings. Its sunsets in the Roman countryside and in the Pontine Marshes are characteristic, sometimes animated by butteri and herds of buffalo. This painting shows two figures in traditional Lazio clothing, a couple of farmers resting near a small votive chapel along the road; on the right the coastal landscape opens up along the Tiber, at the bottom of which the profile of Rome stands out, with the Dome of St. Peter and Castel Sant'Angelo. Above all, the typically romantic atmosphere of a sunset, with its play of soft, pink lights. The painting, relined, is presented in a period frame.

Oval neorenaissance extendable table in silver fir, France late XIX century. Leafy carvings, rosettes and heads of mythical animals from which a group of fruits emerges. Curl-shaped legs culminating in acorn-shapes feet. Silver fir structural elements.

Hunting scene

Watercolor etchings. Taken from a posthumous edition by Nicolas Bonnart (1636 -1718), as written at the bottom left, the four scenes are titled at the bottom in French, and depict a group of knights who try their hand at hunting different animals: l bear, deer, wild boar and birds. The central folds of the book are evident, there are humidity stains. They are presented in a stylish frame, in old-fashioned painted wood.
