Description
As explained in the Preface, we are faced not with a translation, but with an adaptation to the French context, by Antoine de la Place, of the short novel "Oroonoko, or the Royal Slave" published in 1688 by Aphra Johnson Behn, a of the first English novels written by a woman. The protagonist, son of a king, model of honor, generosity and good education, perfectly embodies the myth of the "noble savage", which occupies so much space in the literature and philosophy of the 18th century, of which our novel represents one of the first appearances. Our edition, second after the first of 1768, was illustrated by 5 planches which unfortunately are missing in our copy.
