Precious full red leather binding with titles and very rich gold friezes on the spine with 5 raised bands, elegant framing with fillets and gold floral decorations on the plates, backplates framed by leather margins with elaborate gilded friezes, in good condition: slight peeling on the caps and on the margins of the plates, minimal scratches and pressure marks to the plates. Gilded cuts with traces of dust. Papers well preserved, slightly browned, with rare foxing. Texte en Français

Description

Famous four-volume edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses, presented in the original Latin text, finely printed with clear and elegant characters, with the French facing translation by Banier (1673-1741), translation published for the first time in 1732. L The engraved iconographic apparatus makes it "un des plus galamment illustrés de tout le [XVIIIe] siècle" according to Cohen's judgment; "The result is a hight point among illustrated books of the eighteenth century" according to Gordon N. Ray. The text in fact it is accompanied by an engraved title page with a portrait of Ovid in a medallion, the dedication epistle to the Duke of Chartres on three engraved framed pages, engraved vignettes at the beginning of each book and 142 splendid ft engravings in a floral frame, one for each fabula narrated , drawn from the works of numerous painters including Boucher, Eisen, Gravelot, Leprince, Monnet, Moreau, Parizeau and St. Gois.As indicated by the engraved title page, the plates are "gravées sur les desseins des meilleurs Peintres Français, par les soins des Mrs. le Mire et Basan Graveurs”. The value of this work is further enhanced by the precious binding and its provenance from the library of the Chateau d'Ermenonville
