Description

First edition of Bernini's important biography written by Filippo Baldinucci, painter and art historian. Bernini had only died a year ago when Baldinucci arrived in Rome in 1681 and on behalf of Christina, Queen of Sweden, he began to work on this biography which is also a defense of the great architect's work against his detractors who accused him of compromising the stability of the Michelangelo dome of St. Peter with his works on the Basilica. Baldinucci's work makes use of direct testimonies from collaborators and the study of the documents of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, for a portrait that is both historical, artistic and human by Bernini. The text is accompanied by a beautiful portrait engraved by Arnold van Westerhout based on a drawing by Giovanni Battista Gaulli (in our copy not positioned in the front door, but immediately before the text) and by 9 tables at the end of the volume, 4 of which are folded referring to the basilica of San Peter. There is an eighteenth-century counterfeit of this book missing from the portrait and which differs from the original edition by a detail of the title page: after Gio the triangular point is replaced by a colon.
