Enamels on canvas. Signed and dated on the back. The pictorial work of the artist Roberto Coda Zabetta is the subject of some of the most complex and contradictory definitions of criticism: those who see pain, anger, fear, discomfort or those who see provocation, the dream, the unconscious. The artistic path of Roberto Coda Zabetta, who travels extensively around the world, is often characterized by the encounter with the culture and iconography of the countries he discovers, as well as by the sometimes dramatic events of which they are protagonists.

Additional Information

Artist: Roberto Coda Zabetta (1975)

Roberto Coda Zabetta was born in Biella on 22 January 1975. Here he initially attended the Experimental Technical Institute, and then completed his studies at the Art Institute of Rome. In 1995, a year before entering the Brera Academy, he met the artist Aldo Mondino, for whom he was studio assistant from 1996 to 2000. Coda Zabetta inherits from Maestro Aldo Mondino a way of being more than the pictorial technique, the true concept of art more than the practical creative practice. In the same studio as Mondino, other young artists, now well-known in the panorama of Italian contemporary art, such as Federico Guida and Dany Vescovi, trained with him. Since 1997 he began to participate in exhibitions and some competitions for young artists, both in Italy and abroad. In 1998, on a summer night, his brother Stefano tragically disappeared and Roberto Coda Zabetta decided to leave for Morocco. On this occasion he begins to paint faces. He later lived long periods in New York and then Berlin and his work increasingly focused on character and action. IDENTITA ANONIME (2000) is his first catalogue, dedicated to the children who died in the genocide in Rwanda. In 2000 he opened his studio in Milan and began a series of works that were very important to him. This was followed by personal exhibitions and participation in collective exhibitions and public and private spaces, which gave rise to a strong movement of criticism around his work. After several personal exhibitions and participation in collective exhibitions in public and private spaces, 2006 is the year of the great exhibition in Rome at the Teatro India, in which Coda Zabetta presents six enormous works on canvas enclosed in monumental wooden planks and a series of works on paper. Having moved to London in 2005, Coda Zabetta was invited to the "BP Portrait Award 2006" at the National Portrait Gallery in London. With "KOI and TRINACRIA", Coda Zabetta together with Filippo Sciascia inaugurates a new phase of his artistic journey at the Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta characterized by the encounter with the culture and iconography of South-East Asia. His mania for embryo research and his constant desire to travel take him to many different places, including Africa, India, Northern Europe and the United States. He currently lives and works in Milan and London.
