Description

Our volume presents the French translation in the treatise “A Compleat System of Optics” published in England in 1738 by the mathematician Robert Smith, professor at Cambridge, awarded the title of Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy from 1716 to 1760. The translation is of the mathematician Nicolas-Claude Duval-Leroy, professor at the Ecole d'Artillerie of Brest, the city in which the Malassis family's printing press has been active since the 17th century. The translator adds important contributions to the English professor's text such as the “Remarques nouvelles sur les Lunettes achromatiques” and the description of the Héliostat. The text is divided into three books: a first book “containing a simple & easy exposition of the Optique”, the second “Dans lequel l’Optique est traitée avec l’étendue & l’exactitude convenables, à l’aide de la Géométrie et du Calcul” and the third “De la manière de tailler les verres & les miroirs des télescopes; & description of optical instruments”. This is followed by the “Additions on a difficult problem concerning the rectiligne movement of the light”. The text is accompanied by 67 folded planches engraved on copper with schemes, diagrams, optical figures and instruments (in our example there are 66 planches: planche XLI is missing). Floral frieze on the title page; engraved headers, drop caps and finials
