Rovereto, 1920

Oil on the table. Signed lower left. The title and date on the back in pencil. Riccardo Viriglio, a landscape painter from Pavia, portrayed urban views mainly of his city and landscape views especially of Lombardy. Here is a glimpse of the village of Roveleto, a small village in the Piacenza countryside at the foot of the pre-Apennine hills. The work is presented in a frame.

Pulcinella's Games

Oil (mixed) on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Additional signature, title, technique and declaration of authenticity on the back. Mario Cortiello, a Neapolitan painter, pupil of Gennaro Villani and later friend and collaborator of Umberto Lilloni, participated in the renewal of Neapolitan painting with his own personal style, without straying from tradition. Endowed with fertile invention and remarkable representational ability, he left behind a rich and varied production. Recurring in his production are landscape or urban views, populated by numerous figures, often, in the Neapolitan setting, by Punchinello, depicted floating on dreamlike backgrounds, so much so that he is defined as the Neapolitan Chagall.

The Olona

Oil on hardboard. Signed lower right. Further signature and title on the back. Giovanni Balansino, Piedmontese by origin but Lombard by adoption, chose to depict his love for both lands with his painting made of broad and nervous brushstrokes, dedicating a large part of his production to them. In the proposed painting, Balansino presents a glimpse of the Olona river, a watercourse entirely in Lombardy, as it flows through the villages of the Lombard plain. The work is presented in a frame.

Hospitalization of the Trident 1916

Oil on cardboard. Signed lower right. On the back there is the name with the title, which locates the small glimpse in Macedonia in 1916, during the First World War. Alfonso Corradi, born in Emilia but trained and then lived in Milan, was a student of ornaments at the Brera Academy and for some years he also devoted himself to scenography. He specialized in landscape and embarked on an exhibition career concentrated above all in Milan. The subject proposed here, although of a landscape nature, is part of a rare production of a series of small pictures, almost sketches, which leads back to the First World War, in particular to the military expedition of an Italian body to Macedonia in 1916, sent by the government to the aim to counter the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian forces during the First World War and to control that territory. Moreover, there is no documentation of the painter's direct participation in this war campaign. The painting is framed.

Owl 1994

Bronze bas-relief. Signed lower left, initials AG upper right. On the back of the panel, there is the name, title and date of the work. Achille Guzzardella, a Milanese sculptor-painter, is particularly renowned for his sculptural portraits of well-known personalities from the Italian art world. Among others, he portrayed Vittorio Sgarbi, who called him 'the fighter of clay' and also 'Achille who paints with his soul'. Eclectic and refined, he has also created other subjects, using different techniques. Oneiric in his oil painting and always close to man in his sculptural work, Guzzardella fascinates art lovers with his concreteness expressed through his personal formal research.

Oil painting on canvas. At the bottom left there is an unidentified signature. Large composition of variegated flowers, placed outdoors on bare, deserted ground. The colors of the flowers are applied with a certain material consistency, making them stand out and emerge from the almost monochromatic background. The painting has some dirt splashes in the lower left corner. It is presented in a contemporary frame.

The composition looks at the productions of the 17th century and offers a table richly laden with fruit trays, baskets of cherries, baskets with peaches and bunches of grapes with decorative vine leaves, terrines with seeds, and glasses, surmounted by a curtain and placed on a fabric. Color was used in a highly material manner in some points, to underline for example the stems of grape leaves, or to create reflections of light on the fruit. The painting presented in a style frame.

Controluce collinare, 1960

The painting, coming from a private collection in Pavia, is published on page 70 of Simona Morani's monograph dedicated to the artist Primo Carena (Bolis editions), with the presentation signed by the art critic Rossana Bossaglia. On the back there is a stamp of participation of the work in the artist's personal exhibition at the Castello Visconteo in Pavia in 1992. The landscape, a stretch of countryside with a backdrop of hills, well expresses the subdued intimacy associated with the rigorous realism that characterizes the production painting by the painter from Pavia. In his landscapes Carena tends "to capture the atmospheric reality of the places without indulging in descriptivism... but constantly supported by a lyrical vein, which is the underlying motif of all his production". The work is presented in a period frame.

The Portrait of the Queen

Oil painting on canvas. At the bottom right there is an unidentified signature. The large canvas presents an interior scene, set in an eighteenth-century court: in the richly furnished room with velvet curtains, sculptures and large paintings on the walls, a queen (identified by her ermine-edged cloak) poses for the painter who is her portrait, surrounded by the court, smiling ladies and gentlemen, and a prelate, who instead seems rather dissatisfied. The work looks at the production of the painter Arturo Ricci (1854 -1919), who specialized in genre scenes set in eighteenth-century courts. The painting is presented in a frame assembled with elements from the early 1900s.
