Rococo Style

The Rococo style developed in France in the first half of the 18th century as an evolution of the late Baroque. Rococo derives from the French term "rocaille", that is, a decoration performed with stones , rocks and shells. Rococo remained in vogue until 1780 when it was accused of being very superficial and of degenerating the art . In its place Neoclassicism takes hold.

The differences between Rococo and Baroque

Although it is a style of direct derivation of the Baroque , it differs substantially from this in the use of colors and heaviness. In fact, if you look at a piece of Rococo style furniture , you will immediately notice that the colors are lighter and above all that the weight of the antique furniture is much less than that of the Baroque style furniture .
The Rococo style incorporates many decorative elements of the Baroque and tends to rework them. They're lighter, have more natural curves and patterns, and best of all, they're reduced to a human size.

What are the characteristics of the Rococo style?

In the Rococo style furnishings, the elegant and sumptuous shapes are immediately noticeable. They have undulations branching into curls or slight floral arabesques. The decorative elements begin to include oriental themes and symmetrical compositions. Rococo style furniture can be recognized by its curved and sinuous lines. The surfaces are veneered and completed by inlays in precious materials such as bronze , marble, ivory and mother of pearl.

Rococo in England

In England the Rococo style is considered as "the French taste for art". Thomas Chippendale studied and adapted the style to English taste to transform the look of English furniture .
