Additional Information

Artist: Cioni Carpi (1932-2011)

Son of Aldo Carpi, for a long time director of the Brera Academy, Cioni (from Eugenio) began to devote himself to painting in Paris. From here he moved to Haiti, then to New York and then to Canada, from where he finally returned to his Milan. In the United States he had met the director Maya Deren, who pushed him towards cinematographic experimentation. From 1959 to 1980 he made many artists' films, now preserved in important archives, including that of the MoMA. Another field of work for him was the theatre: the scenography for the Piccolo and the collaborations with composers such as Giacomo Manzoni and Bruno Maderna were memorable. A further chapter was linked to Narrative Art, of which Carpi is recognized as one of the protagonists in the international arena. Invited to the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1980, his creativity was also expressed in photography, installations, video, drawing, writing, artist's books, as well as painting.
