Un volume fotografico dedicato all'Armenia, un paese antico dai panorami indimenticabili: gli strapiombi, le vallate pietrose, i laghi, il cielo immenso con le nuvole che si rincorrono all'infinito. E poi le città grandi e piccole, con i giovani nella capitale e gli anziani che giocano a dama nelle stradine dei villaggi. La vera essenza, l'anima dell'Armenia, sono i monasteri millenari con le loro cupole, le Madonne, le croci di pietra, sbalzate, ricamate, incise da millenni nella caratteristica pietra rossa e grigia. Monasteri isolati nel fondo delle valli, scavati nella roccia delle montagne, apparentemente vuoti e deserti, ma sempre aperti al culto della chiesa cristiana più antica del mondo. Le fotografie ritraggono le cerimonie più sacre, momenti di vita quotidiana, mestieri perduti, persone dai volti senza tempo; scatti straordinari dai quali emerge l'immagine di un popolo forte e gentile, che ha conservato nei secoli una profonda unicità.

Don McCullin (born 1935, London) is one of the most important photographers of our time. For more than fifty years, his uncompromising black-and-white photographs have shaped our awareness and understanding of modern conflict and its consequences. His images tell the remarkable story of his life and work, including his most famous assignments in Berlin, Vietnam, Cambodia, Biafra, Bangladesh, and the Middle East. The Winner of the Warsaw Gold Medal and the World Press Photographer Award, he was awarded the ICP Cornell Capa Award in 2006. Key periods in McCullin's life, including his early experiences of evacuation and the Blitz, his commissions from Berlin in 1961 and Cyprus in 1964, and his most famous work for the Sunday Times are here explored alongside more recent projects with Christian Aid, his photographs of last tribes in the Omo River Valley, South Kenya, and Irian Jaya, New Guinea, and, in the last few years, those of still-life and English landscapes at his home in Somerset. A photographic journey across the ruins and landscapes of the boundaries of the Roman Empire completes the volume.

The people, terrain, buildings and rulers of Ethiopia - such as Emperor Melenik, Lej Iyasu and Emperor Haile Selassie - make it a highly photogenic country, as this lavishly illustrated book reveals.

Situated in lofty, often inaccessible mountains between the Red Sea and the Blue Nile, and extending far into the Horn of Africa, it is a complex and mysterious country which as always exercised an extraordinary fascination for the outside world. The book begins with an introduction which gives a brief history of Ethiopia in this period, and describes the role of photography at this time. The richly captured images of Ethiopia Photographed bear witness to many personalities and places not previously seen and, in many cases, now lost for all time but for the photogenic memories recorded here.

In Blackout the landscape is present only as a brooding, eerie image of itself: the blue of the sky has become the deep black of space, while the earth appears in pale negative. This lunarlike terrain humbles the viewer before a foreign, awe-inspiring nature and repositions the notion of the romantic sublime.
