Quando nell'Ottocento la Russia irruppe sulla scena della letteratura, il mutamento fu radicale e irreversibile. Qualcosa di analogo, ma ben più discreto, avvenne con la musica, nata anch'essa d'improvviso, con Glinka, e sviluppatasi poi attraverso una fioritura dove spiccavano maestri sommi quali Musorgskij e popolarissimi come Cajkovskij. Si scoprì in tal modo come a est della Germania, che per secoli aveva rappresentato l'Oriente della musica, si aprisse un altro territorio, immenso, che avrebbe aggiunto una speziatura sino ad allora ignota al mondo dei suoni e scompaginato la nostra stessa abitudine di pensare la musica.

La vita di Jerry Lee Lewis, nato nel 1935, fu burrascosa fin dall'adolescenza: rubò, frequentò una scuola religiosa, ne venne espulso. Poi venne la musica: nel 1956 partecipò al mitico Million Dollar Quartet, la registrazione di una jam session con Elvis Presley e Johnny Cash, e poco dopo incise Great Balls of Fire, hit destinata a diventare leggenda. Il suo modo selvaggio e anticonformista di esibirsi dal vivo - suonava il piano in piedi dopo aver calciato via il seggiolino, a volte si sedeva addirittura sulla tastiera cambiò la storia del rock; le sue tecniche di esibizione furono adottate da musicisti come Elton John e Billy Joel, per citare solo i più celebri. Lewis diventò una star internazionale, ma gli scandali (come le sue nozze con la cugina tredicenne: si trattava del terzo matrimonio, e della seconda bigamia) e la dipendenza da pasticche e alcol segnarono pesantemente la sua carriera. Solo nel 1989 il film dedicato alla sua vita (Great Ball of Fire, con Wynona Ryder e Dennis Quaid) riaccese i riflettori sul cantante, che andò incontro a una consacrazione che dura tuttora.

During the years between the restoration of the Medici to Florence and the election of Cosimo I, the Medici family sponsored a series of splendid public festivals, reconstructed here by Anthony M. Cummings. Cummings has utilized unexpectedly rich sources of information about the musical life of the time in contemporary narrative accounts of these occasions--histories, diaries, and family memoirs. In this interdisciplinary work, he explains how the festivals combined music with art and literature to convey political meanings to Florentine observers. As analyzed by Cummings, the festivals document the political transformation of the city in the crucial era that witnessed the end of the Florentine republic and the beginnings of the Medici principate. This book will interest all students of the life and institutions of sixteenth-century Florence and of the Medici family. In addition, the author furnishes new evidence about the contexts for musical performances in early modern Europe. By describing such contexts, he ascertains much about how music was performed and how it sounded in this period of music history and shows that the modes of musical expression were more varied than is suggested by the relatively few surviving examples of actual pieces of music.
