Caratteristica distintiva di questo manuale è l'utilizzo del calcolo differenziale direttamente nel corso dell'esposizione, piuttosto che in apposite note e appendici separate. L'autore presuppone la conoscenza dei concetti fondamentali del calcolo in una e più variabili; questo gli consente di presentare le decisioni di ottimizzazione in maniera più compatta e coerente. Il libro affronta tutti gli argomenti canonici di un primo corso di microeconomia (teoria del consumatore, teoria dell'impresa, equilibrio concorrenziale e benessere, forme di mercato non concorrenziali, mercati dei fattori), dedicando al tempo stesso una particolare attenzione ad argomenti più avanzati ma ormai essenziali per una formazione economica di base (teoria dei giochi, scelta in condizioni di incertezza, esternalità, informazione asimmetrica). La trattazione matematica, pur utilizzando il calcolo differenziale, si mantiene elementare. L'esposizione, inoltre, procede con l'ausilio di esempi numerici e analisi grafiche, e con il frequente ricorso a esercizi risolti e applicazioni pratiche.

This 1986 book examines some of the main issues that have characterized macroeconomics: the debate between 'monetarists' and 'Keynesians'; the response to demand shocks and supply shocks, by which the monetary authorities control aggregrate nominal income and the use and relevance of the money supply as a target; and the consumption function and the determinants of wealth. It shows that Keynesian stabilization policies succeeded in reducing instability due to demand shocks dramatically, but that no aggregrate demand policy can stabilize both price and employment simultaneously after a supply shock. However, by assigning an overall 'social cost' to (excess) unemployment and (initially) unexpected inflation, an optimism path can be derived. In looking at the consumption function and determinants of wealth the empirical evidence is shown to be most consistent with the life-cycle hypothesis. A concluding section is devoted to the impact on private and national society of the 'social security revolution'.

This 1984 book describes the development of thought, both of Keynes and others, culminating in the publication in 1936 of Keynes' General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. As one of Keynes' close collaborators - from December 1929, when the writing of the Treatise was nearing its completion - Richard Khan provides a uniquely insightful analysis of these events. The author starts with a brief survey of the contributions influential in forming Keynes' early ideas, and moves on to explore the significance of the Quantity Theory of Money, and traces the development of Keynes' attitude towards the theory through his published books. Subsequent lectures are devoted to Keynes' Treatise on Money, and to his more popular writings as an economic adviser which marked the transition from the thinking in the Treatise to that in the General Theory which the author critically examines. The final lecture records the author's memory of his personal relationship with Keynes.
